Recording at The Ranch The Studio Environment The number one element to tracking great recordings is that the artist be able to be focused and at ease. We've had many artists tell us that they love recording at The Ranch because of the comfortable, friendly environment free from distractions. The studio space and staff will make you feel right at home! The Ranch Recording Studio located in a classic Outer Banks ranch style home. The allure of comfort meets the sophistication of technology in the Control Room. Recording is managed through the Pro Tools 8.0.1 system, and the signals are routed through world-class mics, mic preamps, and processors. The Custom Built Quad Core PC, coupled with premium analog outboard gear, removes limitations in the recording and mastering processes for the creation of an ideal, unique sound. We have at our access a network of world class musicians. Contact us for a list of available session players. Mixing We pride ourselves on providing mixes that stand up to major label big budget mixes. We never rush or clock watch when mixing. Before the mix begins, we discuss with you what your sonic expectations are. We encourage you to bring in recordings that you admire, so we can hear what you are looking for. We can achieve results that are exciting, wide, and in your face or intricate, poignant and dynamic. The only limitation is your imagination. You also get a chance to live with the mix for a few days. If there are tweaks, we will accommodate you within your mix budget and make sure everything is 100% before we close the session. All projects need some pre mix production work. Perhaps the vocals need a little pitch correction, the drums need some post production work, and maybe a guitar needs to be re-amped. We will work with you within your budget to make sure none of the sonic elements are compromised. E-Sessions We have the capability for you to FTP your audio data to us. Perhaps there is a musician that is in New York, but you live in Norfolk. We can set up the session, track and upload it right back to you. If mixing, we will FTP hi resolution, uncompressed references for you to approve.  In today’s fast paced digital world, almost anything can be accomplished using E-Sessions, from re-mastering a previous recording to actually recording and tracking an entire album of new material. Production of Original Songs If you have an original song, which can be anything from a sheet of words, to something you can sing from start to finish, to a complete arrangement you can play on an instrument, we have experience in helping you get that idea turned into a CD you can be proud of. We can help with the lyrics, melody, chords, arrangement, through to the final CD including the CD face design. Whatever you have, we can tweak, what you don't have, we can provide. You don't need to be able to play an instrument. In fact, if you can't sing and you have a passion to record a song you've written, we can even provide a wide range of singers - although this may involve a small additional cost, negotiable with the singers. We will also help you ensure that your original songs are properly copyrighted, ensuring you receive credit and compensation in the event another artist may wish to record or perform your material. Finally, if you want to record an original song but don't have one, get in touch. We may well be able to source one for you. As well as in house writing we have access to the work of other writers, some of whom have had significant chart success. Cover Songs If your recording project includes songs originally written by another artist we will guide you through the process of obtaining the appropriate permissions and ensuring that the original artist gets their due. Bands Live bands present their own challenges to record. We are often asked by worried bands, whether each member will have to be recorded separately, or whether the band can play together. The answer is yes. Both. We try to be flexible and record however is necessary to get the project done the best way it can be, but as a rule, the band will set up to play all together, with the everyone in the main live room, the drum kit mic-ed, the bass player going direct and the guitarists amps mic-ed in isolation.  The vocals are recorded live in the room as a guide. This means the band can create a feel that the drummer and the bass player can respond to and get a great take or takes. After all drums and bass are done, guitars are overdubbed if needed, in the main live room and lastly vocals redone to perfection in the ideal acoustic environment of our main live room, through our Neumann mic and Avalon pre amp. Throughout the process each musician is provided with his or her own individual headphone mix, allowing them to adjust how much of each instrument they are hearing as well as the overall volume and sound. We have plenty of mics for recording the drum kit, including the usual classics like SM57s for the snare, condensers for overheads and hi hats, a full set of tom mics and a dedicated kick drum mic. We have so far also recorded live mandolin, violin, pedal steel, gospel choirs, and hand percussion. We will work with you to achieve the perfect sound for your needs. Mastering The term mastering is often misunderstood and misrepresented. Although it does include putting that final polished, commercial CD sound to an individual track, it can also mean putting a collection of tracks together in a way that sounds coherent and flows like a great live concert would. This includes not just the sound of the tracks but their related levels, their order and the length of the gaps between tracks. We can and are happy to master individual tracks but we are also happy to help turn your collection of songs into a finished album or EP. We do not offer a set price for fixing tracks we have not yet heard as we do not know what is “broken” about them and so before we can quote you we would need to hear the tracks and you would need to give us a good indication of what you are looking for from them. We treat each track individually and do not use some mastering preset on a one stop mastering rack mount unit or quick fix do everything mastering plug in. We can indeed make it sound really loud. We would much rather make it sound really good! The Ranch offers client sit-in mastering and also mail or electronic delivery mastering. Both options can benefit an artist in different ways. Mastering is the final step in your audio project and can sometimes be the most technical and important step in creating a successful sound. If you are unable to attend a mastering session due to location or any other factor, electronic delivery may be the best and fastest option for you. In today's high speed internet controlled world, we can accept 24 bit files directly on to our own ftp server with none of the quality loss a 16 bit CD may give you. Electronic projects can also be exported into a digital format in which we can instantly send back to you through our ftp server once the session is completed. Final masters can be overnighted on high quality and error free CD's to put the physical project back in to your hands for replication and distribution, or we can arrange duplication through our Disc Makers Studio Partnership. Audio Editing Our vocal comping, vocal re-pitching, drum comps, time correction for live drums, instruments and vocals, and dropping audio to video, is extremely fast and reliable. And most importantly....musical. After we edit your tracks you’ll never believe they are anything but completely live, and completely natural. We strive to preserve the artistry and expression of your playing or singing while removing the imperfections. Voiceover Recording We can provide expert voiceover recording. We have an excellent mic collection and pre amps for vocal presence and clarity. Our engineers have recorded music and dialogue for radio, television, and film applications for both major and independent movie studios. Demos Feel free to come in and track and mix your demos with us. We love working with new and up and coming artists. We will cater to your needs just like any other session. On Location We can record your project on location using our mobile pro tools recording rig! Record your next live show for use as a demo or concert cd. We can also provide experienced live front of house and monitor engineers for concerts, festivals, and events.
